Filling voids
Fluidity of cellular concrete makes it an ideal material for filling voids underground. Cellular concrete has the consistency of a thick paint, so it can be pumped under pressure in voids, it expands twice on average and fills the whole space, including the back corners, to ensure complete filling of the void (applies to gas concrete only).
Voids are filled with cellular concrete in many different cases:
- Abandoned pipes - filling with cellular concrete of abandoned pipes under the highway. This is done to prevent possible settling of the roadway and to reduce the risk of migration of contaminants that may occur in the future;
- Voids in the soil under roads/rail lines - during construction of underground structures voids often appear in their building and operation;
- Voids under concrete slabs - voids often form under concrete slabs or areas of roads due to poor soil compaction, erosion or because of use of frozen soil as backfill. Traditional methods can not adequately fill these voids.
